College student born and raised in New England, seeking transfer to college in miami and need your advise!?

Yazar: admin March 10, 2010

Hey there everyone, I’m 20 years old and currently attend Johnson & Wales University in Providence,RI. I have been born and raised in New England, and am thinking its time for a change. My school has another campus in North Miami, FL which i was considering transferring to. From the research I have done i understand that the campus is not in the best area, but I am planning on coming with a friend and we would only live off campus so that has little matter to me I will only go there for class time. We are coming down there in February to check out apartments and different areas, I wanted to be ahead of the 8 ball before I got down there, so I have a few questions:1) What are college friendly communities in Miami? So far I have gathered Coconut Grove & Coral Gables..true false? 2) I hear that it is expensive, and I will be seeking employment, nothing big maybe restaurant or marina job..how hard will it be to find a good fit job like this?
any advice on the move would b gr8y apprcted tx

Well your research is correct. North Miami, Fl is not a great area. If you are going to live off campus you will definitly have many options to choose from.
Because Miami is so large and diverse, and there are quite a few universities there really are no college communities. Students usually spread out but you may find certain areas with a larger concentration of college students, usually in the immediate vicinty of colleges. Because NM is a bad area you will have to spread out to a different city.
The University of miami is located in Coral Gables,a small city in Miami-dade, and you will find quite a few students living in that area. The problem with coral gables is that it can be very pricey. Coconut grove is also trendy but once again, pricey! NM is located almost in the center of Miami and just about any destination worth visiting in Miami, is just a short walk or drive away. As you may know, miami is renowned for its nightlife so if you come down to Miami, you will have no shortage of clubs or parties to go to. You can go partying on south beach, bayside, downtown miami, ft. lauderdale. Trust me, if you like to have fun, you will find it in Miami.
There are some very nice areas in Miami, that are of course very expensive, and there are other areas that are downright scary. So if you find a place that sounds too good to be true, be wary, it may be in a really bad area. With that said you may be able to find some affordable apartments in miami, espacially with the recent housing colapse, right now its a buyers market so there should be plenty of ‘inventory’ to choose from. Dont be afraid to venture into areas a bit farther away from NM, but remember that North to South traffic is very heavy in the mornings…So keep commuting time in mind when you decide how far away you want to live.
You can find a restaurant or reatil job just about anywhere. Just go to one of the many malls and you are bound to find job openings. If you want to work at the marinas, you can live in coral gables or somewhere around there, and drive a bit down to key biscayne or some of the middle keys to do marina work.

If you have any more questions..email me and I will be happy to help.

miami life?

Yazar: admin March 8, 2010

i am 16 years old and i live in Canada. I love Miami and i hope to make south Florida my home in the future.. anyways, i know taht as a canadian citizen, i can stay, without a visa, up to 6 months in the United States. So after grad, i want to rent a vacation home in Coconut Grove (or any other neighborhood in Miami). my question is how old do i have to be in order to do this? i plan to stay for 3 months with a friend

You have to get consent and have your parents communicate with the lease holders.

If you search "vacation homes in coconut grove" you will find more information

Miami residents:I need a detailed/good description of the neighborhoods of miami?

Yazar: admin March 6, 2010

Since there is so much that goes on in miami and things are all over the place I owuld like those who live in miami because moving and need to knwo what each is like a general run down and like the differences like whats for younger more active people what areas are for the older people good places to live and not so good places to live commuting where its good and not so good to certain things the whats better to live miami beach sobe aventura or coconut grove dont want a townhouse and anything from a house to condo/apartment and what are good ares to find residents as well as places you need a car and others where transportation is easy
I know this seems like a bit much and maybe confusing but besides sobe where i have been to for partying i have no idea on where to live in miami

Okay, instead of giving you the rundown for every neighborhood, I’ll give you a feel for the trendier parts of town.

SOBE has relatively cheap rent, but parking is a hassle. Most of the cheaper buildings are older and have wall unit air-conditioners. Transportation in SOBE is easy, however getting from Miami to the beach and back via public transport isn’t the best.

Coconut Grove has a very bohemian feel, the Grove circulator (a bus) runs into the late night and connects you with Metro-Rail (rapid transit) Metro Rail connects the Grove to Kendall and Hialeah but it is mostly used for transport downtown. The Grove has many restaurants and bars that are easily accessible on foot. Use caution in the Northwestern sections of the Grove. The Grove is also close to South Miami (3miles) Downtown (4miles) and Sobe (10 miles)

South Miami has a small town feel. It is becoming much more popular with the younger crowd due to its proximity to the University of Miami. It also is very pedestrian friendly and is nestled between the Grove and the Gables, it has fewer bars and restaurants than the Grove, but it is becoming a destination in its own right.

Downtown Miami is also growing rapidly, and is growing its nightlife. Lofts and condos abound, and good deals are getting easier to find in terms of rent. Downtown Miami is very pedestrian friendly and features an elevated people mover that is free and puts you within blocks of most destinations. it is automated and runs roughly every 5 minutes. A trendier crowd is quickly occupying Miami’s core, most condos feature breathtaking water views or outstanding city scapes.

upscale neighborhoods in Miami?

Yazar: admin March 4, 2010

I’m trying to find out more about Miami neighborhhoods and I want to know of some good upscale neighborhoods that are close to where all the fun is. So a few I want to know more about is South Beach, Coconut Grove, and Midtown. I would prefer an area with a mix of blacks and latinos. I’m also trying to look for an area thats suitable for someone thats 19-21yrs old.

Well with Fisher Island you have to take a car ferry to get off when you want to leave.
There are alot of Up scale neighborhoods in Miami, alot of rich people live in Miami, and just about every neighborhood will have Latinos this Miami we are talking about and Blacks are spread around too but not as much. All homes south of 63rd street on Miami Beach are up scale. No homes under $650,000 and apartments under $230,000. Coconut Grove has some very expensive homes, Midtown is a nice new development, Downtown Miami has alot of new upscale condos going up. Coral Gables is a little bit far from the city but very nice. Of course there is star island and the Palm island hibiscus island, sunset islands, North Bay Road.
Near downtown there is Bay Point a private gated community 5 minutes from Downtown, 10 minutes from the airport and 10 minutes from south beach. All these areas are very expensive and very diverse. 19-21 year old I recommend a condo in South Beach or Somewhere Downtown.

Witch Hyatt in Miami is closer to where all the action is: S.E Second Ave or 50 Alhambra Plaza?

Yazar: admin March 2, 2010

How many minutes are they from each other? Do they really have water taxi! wow, if they do, about how much do they cost? what is coconut grove, little havana and bayside? Thank you coming to visit you guys from Iowa. Any tips? Thank you in advance!!

The Hyatt on SE Second Avenue is in Downtown Miami near the hwy. It’s near Brickell (our Financial District) an other than a few decent restaurants and cafes which the locals visit there’s nothing exciting about the area. I enjoy it but again its near the business area. Happy Hour is popular and if you enjoy live music you can go to Tobacco Road (oldest bar in Miami). In the opposite direction is Bayside an open air mall near the bay. The parking is too expensive so locals really dont go here only tourists. It’s something to do in the area but five minutes away you have South Beach with better restaurants and shops. Why go to a mall? The Hyatt on Alhambra is in Coral Gables and within walking distance of restaurants and shops. It’s a very nice property but in regards to where the action is this hotel is also very business like. Happy hour is popular here two and on the first Friday of the month the art galleries open their doors until late. There’s music, free drinks and lots of people walking around. I enjoy it but it’s not like South Beach with all the clubs (if that is what you want). By the way this Hyatt is safer than the one in downtown Miami. I would not walk around at night from the one on SE Second Avenue. That area is deserted at night. Coconut Grove is another part of Miami with lots of shops, restaurants and bars. It’s also very popular and if you enjoy live music you can go to Mr. Joes or 11 Leprechauns. Good food, beer and music. The restaurants around here are pretty decent as well. In regards to Little Havana there really isnt anything fun to do other than play dominos or chess with the seniors in the park. Once a month the galleries host Cultural Fridays and there’s music, food, movies, art all night long. It’s actually fun but in the day time unless you are doing a tour of Little Havana all you are going to see is a bunch of furniture stores, bakeries, and cafeterias. (Look up the tours with Dr. George below which are popular). If you want to taste some authentic Cuban food then go to Versailles Restaurant (Miami’s # 1 Cuban Central). You can have some cuban coffee, cuban bread, pastries, midnight sandwich, croquetes, etc. The food is good too. BUT if you prefer some action with your Cuban food then you can go to Bongos in downtown Miami near Bayside or Larios on the Beach. The actionn is on South Beach so dont worry too much about the hotel location and think about renting a car to get around because our public transportation is horrible. Oh, and skip the water taxi. It’s not like Venice. You can however take a tour of Miami by boat from bayside.

how do you party at unversity of miami (in florida) if you are under 21?

Yazar: admin February 27, 2010

I understand that you can have a fake ID but it is always risky… Are there alot of frat parties and house parties? Because someone told me that everyone hand out in the clubs at coconut grove but you have to be 21 and they can smell a fake ID from a mile away
okayy but i am asking how do i even get into the nightclubs at coconut grove and south beach if i am not 21
and whats fiu?

FIU is Florida International University — the large state university in Miami. U of M is private. Hang out with a U of M Fraternity or Sorority. Unless things have changed a lot in the past few years they don’t have any problem getting people into anywhere.

Miami – Fort Lauderdale Airport help please?

Yazar: admin February 26, 2010

I have flight at 11am on saturday departing from Fort Lauderdale (FLL). I am visiting Miami and live in Coconut Grove. What would be the options to get to FLL??

What time should I leave coconut grove?

Any help would be much appreciated

There’s a 6:07 am and an 8:06 am Tri-rail northbound from the Metro-rail transfer station on Saturdays. It takes about 30 min to get from C. Grove Metro-rail station to the transfer station. So pick up whatever metro-rail train you need to get to Tri-rail on time; get off at the Tri-rail transfer & buy your ticket to Dania Beach/Airport station in Ft. Ldle. (about $5.00). Then at the Ft Ldl station the Tri-rail shuttle will take you to your terminal. The tr-rail part will take from 30-45 minutes, including the shuttle. You can probably make it with the 8:06 train; but to be sure, take the 6:07.

Go to www.tri-rail.com.

What is it like growing up in Miami, Florida?

Yazar: admin February 24, 2010

Also, do you know anything about Coconut Grove or the Upper East Side neighborhoods?

Well i didn’t grow up in Miami, I moved there 3 years ago and I frequent the Coconut Grove area, I have a few relatives that live there.

It’s an alright area, you always see tourists around there. There’s a lot of night clubs and bars and upscale stores. It’s mainly a upscale area.

There’s so many upper east side neighborhoods you have Magnolia Park, Bay Point Estates, Morningside, Bayside, Belle Meade, Shorecrest, and Palm Grove.
