College student born and raised in New England, seeking transfer to college in miami and need your advise!?

Yazar: admin March 10, 2010

Hey there everyone, I’m 20 years old and currently attend Johnson & Wales University in Providence,RI. I have been born and raised in New England, and am thinking its time for a change. My school has another campus in North Miami, FL which i was considering transferring to. From the research I have done i understand that the campus is not in the best area, but I am planning on coming with a friend and we would only live off campus so that has little matter to me I will only go there for class time. We are coming down there in February to check out apartments and different areas, I wanted to be ahead of the 8 ball before I got down there, so I have a few questions:1) What are college friendly communities in Miami? So far I have gathered Coconut Grove & Coral Gables..true false? 2) I hear that it is expensive, and I will be seeking employment, nothing big maybe restaurant or marina job..how hard will it be to find a good fit job like this?
any advice on the move would b gr8y apprcted tx

Well your research is correct. North Miami, Fl is not a great area. If you are going to live off campus you will definitly have many options to choose from.
Because Miami is so large and diverse, and there are quite a few universities there really are no college communities. Students usually spread out but you may find certain areas with a larger concentration of college students, usually in the immediate vicinty of colleges. Because NM is a bad area you will have to spread out to a different city.
The University of miami is located in Coral Gables,a small city in Miami-dade, and you will find quite a few students living in that area. The problem with coral gables is that it can be very pricey. Coconut grove is also trendy but once again, pricey! NM is located almost in the center of Miami and just about any destination worth visiting in Miami, is just a short walk or drive away. As you may know, miami is renowned for its nightlife so if you come down to Miami, you will have no shortage of clubs or parties to go to. You can go partying on south beach, bayside, downtown miami, ft. lauderdale. Trust me, if you like to have fun, you will find it in Miami.
There are some very nice areas in Miami, that are of course very expensive, and there are other areas that are downright scary. So if you find a place that sounds too good to be true, be wary, it may be in a really bad area. With that said you may be able to find some affordable apartments in miami, espacially with the recent housing colapse, right now its a buyers market so there should be plenty of ‘inventory’ to choose from. Dont be afraid to venture into areas a bit farther away from NM, but remember that North to South traffic is very heavy in the mornings…So keep commuting time in mind when you decide how far away you want to live.
You can find a restaurant or reatil job just about anywhere. Just go to one of the many malls and you are bound to find job openings. If you want to work at the marinas, you can live in coral gables or somewhere around there, and drive a bit down to key biscayne or some of the middle keys to do marina work.

If you have any more questions..email me and I will be happy to help.
